The Grand Opening of the Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge over Route 14 in Millport started at 12:30 on the bridge. Mission and Trail Background
Mission: The Friends of the Catharine Valley Trail foster a public, multi-use trail and natural corridor along the abandoned Chemung Canal and railroad system. We promote trail use by all residents and visitors through publicity, special events planning, and liaisons with regional tourism agencies, in accordance with guidelines established by NYS Parks. Our goal is to facilitate a safe and enjoyable trail experience. When completed, the Catharine Valley Trail (CVT) will be a 12-mile, multi-use trail that will connect Watkins Glen State Park and Mark Twain State Park in the Southern Tier of New York State. Most of the trail is on portions of abandoned Northern Central Railroad and Chemung Canal towpath corridors in New York's Finger Lakes region. The trail spans Schuyler and Chemung counties, passing through the communities of Watkins Glen, Montour Falls, Millport, and Pine Valley to Horseheads. The four-mile section of trail between Montour Falls and Millport opened in June 2003 and the canal towpath trail south of Genesee Street in Montour Falls is complete. The one-mile section of trail between Cook Street and South Genesee Street in Montour Falls opened in September 2000. The bicycle-pedestrian bridge over NYS Route 14 was completed in November of 2005. The former rail bed in the Catharine Marsh segment of the CVT was completed in 2007.
